Patricia Waithera

Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya

Patricia lives in the informal settlement of Kibera, Nairobi where she runs a small salon. Patricia turned to embroidery in 2020 when she made a block for the Kenyan COVID Quilts describing how the pandemic had closed businesses. She followed this up in 2021 with a wildebeest for the Sister Artists 2 challenge which was quilted by Sandra Cronauer-Mitra in Massachusetts and auctioned. Patricia says that her favorite part of the embroidery project has been learning a new skill. She is also pleased to have invested the small stipend she has earned from embroidery so far in her salon. Patricia is an active member of Shield of Faith, the women’s association which was formed to facilitate embroidery training and now takes on broader social challenges in Kibera.
