Esther Wambui

Kibera, Kenya

Esther lives in Nairobi with her three children one of whom Hope, 4, has albinism. Esther does not have steady employment and works odd jobs to support her family. She was one of twenty members of the Albinism Society of Kenya (ASK) who received embroidery training in the summer of 2021 to make stories for the Kenyan Albinism Quilts. Esther’s shocking story showed a nurse in a hospital who is considering selling a baby born with albinism. Esther is associated with Shield of Faith, the women’s association in Kibera, and says that stitching has helped her to learn a new skill and share her story with other mothers. “My heart rejoices at this,” she says.
