Anne is a single mother who lives in Nairobi and has a child with albinism. Anne was one of twenty members of the Albinism Society of Kenya (ASK) who received embroidery training in the summer of 2021 to make stories for the Kenyan Albinism Quilts. Her story described the challenges of buying the protective gear – sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat – that keeps her child safe from skin cancer. Anne’s husband left her when she gave birth to her child and she depends on odd jobs to make ends meet. She is grateful to the embroidery project for having helped her to learn a new skill and receive a stipend after trainings. Anne is associated with Shield of Faith, the women’s association in Kibera that formed to organize embroidery training and now advocates for social change.
