Abigael Kwamboka

Kangemi, Nairobi, Kenya

Abigael, 26, is a mother of two who lives in the informal settlement of Kangemi, Nairobi. Her embroidery is famous in the settlement for having sparked one of the most successful vaccination campaigns in the country. It happened after Abigael signed up for training in 2020 to make embroidered stories for the Kenyan COVID Quilts project. Her design showed a needle in hot pursuit of the virus and was so striking that it was adopted by the Kangemi Advocacy and Self Help Group as the logo for a vaccination campaign that secured over 1,500 vaccinations in the Kangemi settlement. Abigael also stitched a hyena for the Sister Artists 2 challenge which was quilted by Victoria Rugo in North Carolina and auctioned.
